EPDM, PVC and Preformed Pond Liners

The most expensive item in any pond is often the pond liner, so it makes sense to take some time and make sure you are choosing the right one. There will be a number of different factors you will need to consider, including the size of your pond, the material used to make the liner, and the thickness of the liner.

The Right Size for Your Pond

Your first task when purchasing one will be to determine the correct size. To figure out the size of your liner you will need to measure both the length and width of your pond as well double the maximum depth. You will also need to allow for one to two feet of overlap all the way around your pond. It is always better to buy one which is too large than to have one which is too small.

Types

They can be made from a variety of materials and come in a number of different thicknesses, or ml. The larger the ml number, the thicker the liner. For smaller ponds, especially if they are free form, a 30 ml liner is a good choice. They are flexible and easy to get into all the twists and turns in your design. If your pond is larger you may want to consider a more durable liner made from 40 ml or 45 ml rubber. This will give you many years of dependable service.

They can be made from a variety of materials. One popular material is EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer) which is an industrial grade rubber. It comes in a variety of thicknesses and works great in just about any type of pond. The main disadvantage of EPDM is its high cost. Many people feel like this material is so easy to work with and durable that it is worth the extra money.

Another material that is commonly used is HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). This synthetic plastic liner is durable and sold in 20 – 40 ml thicknesses. It is less expensive than a rubber liner and usually flexible enough to mold well into tight corners. This is a good choice for those installing a new pond on a budget.

Another option is one made from PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). These are not as durable as either EPDM or HDPE pond liners, but are usually less expensive.

It is also possible to find rigid and preformed liners made from either fiberglass or plastic. Fiberglass rigid liners are more expensive, but usually much more durable as well.
Whichever type of material you select , make sure that it is made with a UV stabilizer. This will protects your liner from harmful UV rays that can make it fall apart in a few years. The material for your pond liner should also be fish safe.
